2024 Wrapped

...And I'm back. Hey everyone, it's time for the yearly tradition of writing a "year in review" post.

Didn't really... write that many blog posts but that's fine, we continue the tradition regardless. Let's start with my favorite, predictions from last year!

How were my predictions for 2024?

In the last blog post, I made a few predictions for 2024. Let's see how they turned out. Not great.

Javascript usage will continue to go up and Typescript will continue to be popularized

I believe this is the only thing that actually held true. I can't find any concrete numbers, the internet post-llm is a disaster for search, but looking at surveys from last year to this year, this appears to have held steady.

There was a bit of controversy earlier this year when people stated that Python was more popular than Javascript, but that was only true because of the survey seperating out "Javascript" and "Typescript" into two separate categories. If you combine them, Javascript is still the most popular language.

I will move to Stoat as my primary programming language

Untrue. Not only did I get a job doing primarily Typescript, Stoat also just... died. Like it never got released. @Beast please fix.

I will release two of the projects I have in the works right now

I'm going to be honest, I don't even remember what projects I was talking about. I released more than two projects, but I have no idea which projects I was referring to at all. Next time I'll be less ambiguous.

I will finally learn time management

Welp, I got better. I use Notion Calendar (rip Cron) for everything and it works well for me. As we'll see later I had a lot on my plate this year but I managed to survive as far as I can tell.

What happened in 2024?

Wow. Where do I even start. Frankly, this has been a LONG year.

In terms of more minor stuff:

...and a lot more. Let's talk about goals.

What about my goals for 2024?

I set a few goals for 2024 in the last blog post. Let's see how I did.

I would like to have 2000 Github commits (~1.5x my current amount)

Didn't quite make it. I'm at 1.5k contributions as I write this. Unless I make 500 commits in the next 12 hours, I'm not going to make it. That's alright, I think I definitely kept up with coding this year.

I would like to have 365 new poems (1 poem a day)

Unfortunately, this didn't really happen. I wrote many poems when I was still at Santa Cruz, but life's just been too busy to keep up with it. I'm hoping to get back into it next year, at a slower pace.

I would like to have released my card game

I did! It took a lot of work but the card game is out there and people are playing it. I'm really happy with how it turned out.

I would like to start working at a startup

I did! I'm actually really happy about this. I think it wasn't super clear cut that I would be able to work given, y'know, school, but it happened! I'm having a ton of fun and learning a lot.

Bonus goal: I'm trying to be healthier this year. The real struggle.

Frankly, no idea. It's probably about the same or maybe worse. I'm not dead yet so I guess that's a win.

What are my predictions for 2025?

Okay, 2024 is over, and it's time to look forward to 2025. Here are my predictions for 2025.

Bun will encounter another controversy

It seems like people are starting to feel a little bit antsy about some of the API decisions that Bun has been making. I think it's public image might start shifting more negatively in 2025, especially if they continue on the trend of "stealing lightningcss" and "integrating s3 api". We'll see how Bun Bake does.

AlphaXiv will hit 100k users

If things continue to go well and we iterate at the speed we've been doing, I think we can hit 100k users pretty fast. I'm really curious to see how the broader academic community reacts to the project.

I will have more free time

With me leaving school, with or without a degree next year, I think I'll have a lot more free time. I'm really excited to see what I can do with it. Let me cook.

I will continue to use my m1 macbook air as my primary computer

I bought it at launch in 2020 and I see no reason to upgrade until the M6. I'm really happy with it and I think it's a great computer. Maybe the best computer release of the decade.

Goals for 2025

Here are my goals for 2025.

Acknowledgements

I want to thank everyone who's been a part of my life this year. I've met so many amazing people and I'm really grateful for all of the experiences I've had. I want to specifically thank my family, my friends, and my mentors. I wouldn't be where I am today without you.

Specific shoutout to Chloe, Amelia, Bryan, Oleks, Gus, Kevin, Jaeden, Elton, and the AlphaXiv team. You all have been amazing and I'm really grateful for all of the experiences we've had together.

Conclusion

2024 was a wild year. 2025 is going to be a little crazy. We'll see how the US will be faring, and we'll see how I am faring. I'm really excited to see what happens next.

I'll catch you all in the next blog post. Have a great new years!
